PENTECOST

Celebrated on the 50th day after Easter Sunday, Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and other followers of Jesus subsequently called Disciples as described in the book of Acts, Chapter 2. Pentecost is also called Whitsunday – this comes from ‘White Sunday’ as ceremonial robes were worn on this day.

It is well recorded that at 9 o’clock in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, 120 of Christ’s disciples were gathered in an ‘upper room’ on the side of hill of Mount Zion and traditionally where the last supper took place some 53 days earlier.

The descent of the Holy Spirit took place & the Apostles & Disciples gathered there “spoke in many tongues”. The descent of the Holy Spirit is described as ‘a mighty rushing wind’ but this is a translation from the Hebrew and Roman word “Ruah” meaning the Spirit of God.

This is all a bit ‘mystic’ to the ordinary mortal such as you and I but certainly something ’happened’ as immediately some 3000 people were baptized.

This year the day of Pentecost or Whitsunday is 11th May.
