The lithograph is taken from the Nocton Parish Magazine of that date.
The view is from the Old Vicarage garden, the large rambling
vicarage itself was knocked down in the 50’s to make way for the new
one
– subsequently sold by the Diocese & now known as the old Vicarage,
the home of Matt and Lynn Corrigan.
At that time, The Editor & Incumbent was the formidable
Cannon George Chard, in charge at Nocton from1909 to1942 - 33 years.
He was responsible for up to 5 services on a Sunday at
Nocton, starting at 8am and generally finishing by 7pm.
The magazine for that month contained even less of interest
than today’s – the difference being that in those days, it cost 1 ½
d (a bit more than ½ p in new money!) whereas today, despite
considerable
inflation over the years, the Magazine is free to all in the parish.
