It
is okay, God is with you!
... THOU ART WITH
ME. Psalm
23:4
Kenneth Wilson tells how he slept in the attic of his family's
four-storey home. As the youngest he went to bed first - and it felt a
long way to the top of the stairs; especially since there was no
electricity up there and a gas light had to be turned on, then turned
off again once he was settled.
He writes, "That room seemed to be at the end of the earth, close to
unexplained noises and dark secrets. My father would try to stop the
windows from rattling by wedging matchsticks into the cracks, but they
rattled in spite of his efforts. Sometimes he'd read me a story. But
inevitably the time would come when he'd turn out the light, shut the
door and I'd hear his steps on the stairs growing fainter and fainter.
Then all would be quiet except for the rattling windows - and my
cowering imagination.
"Once I remember my father asking, 'Would you rather I leave the light
on and go downstairs, or turn the light out and stay with you for a
while?' I chose his presence in the darkness over his absence in the
light."
Is that not what we all want most: the assurance that God is with us?
In Psalm 23 David says, 'Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me ...'
God's love is not determined by your comfort level. You never have to
wonder where He is, or worry that he will abandon you when the going
gets tough. Whatever you are facing right now, just look up and
whisper, 'Thou art with me.'
